IPS Partners with Michigan DOT in Railroad Crossing Safety
Test
Intelligent Perimeter Systems (IPS), a developer and distributor
of advanced counter-terrorist vehicle barrier and traffic control systems,
today announced that its Model 100 retractable delineators have been
selected to be installed at select railroad crossings throughout Michigan,
as part of a Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) railroad
crossing safety test. The test is expected to begin in September 2007.
The Model 100 delineators utilizes a low power requirement - control
box on 110VAC or solar power, underground pylons on 24VDC – provides
easy and low cost operation. The actuator driven flexible pylons that
are electronically deployed at railroad crossings when a train is approaching
to prevent vehicles from driving around crossing gates or signals in
an attempt to outrun a train. "We are excited about the upcoming
test and the prospect of working with MDOT to improve railroad crossing
safety in Michigan," said IPS President Mike Korodi. "There
are approximately 4700 public railroad crossings in the state. IPS is
now positioned to provide ideal safety crossing solutions to protect
motorists and save lives."
Designed to provide a barrier across the entire width of a crossing roadway,
the retractable Model 100 delineators automatically deploy as a train
approaches, reaching their full deployment height in about 6 seconds.
The delineators have are self-contained and utilize a smooth bore shaft
system protecting the motor from impact damage during operation, an integrated
battery backup, increasing their reliability. A fully redundant design
with no single point of failure ensures that the system works even if
one delineator fails. The Model 100 delineators are activated from a
signal from the cross gate system so they are deployed in conjunction
with the gate arms.
"IPS delineators offer the best protection in the world for trains and
motorists," Korodi said. "In the United States, accidents at railroad
crossings occur approximately every three hours. IPS products can and will
reduce this number dramatically."
IPS offers the Model 100 delineators as part of a complete traffic management
control system designed to direct traffic around railroad crossings and
other high-risk intersections and roadways. Additionally, IPS' flexible
software architecture allows it to seamlessly integrate with other major
access control systems and related traffic management peripherals.
IPS has a global network of distributor partners, including a reciprocal
agreement with UK-based APT Controls, the UK's leading provider of traffic
management systems. Through a partnership with APT formalized in December
2006, IPS manufactures select APT products in North America, while APT
manufactures and distributes IPS products in Europe and around the world.
